The Italian Song Festival, more commonly known as the Festival di Sanremo, is a music festival that has been held annually in Italy since 1951. Many of the most famous figures in Italian pop music have participated as competitors, guests, or composers, and it is considered one of the most important and longest-running music festivals in the world.
I have never followed the Festival di Sanremo, but in recent years it has become increasingly popular among young people, to the point that Irene, a cheerful and delightful thirty-year-old, asked me to create a visualization that traced its most significant milestones. I must thank her, as working on this project allowed me to discover both well-known and lesser-known names from the Festival, many of whom I still listen to in my headphones!
The visualization is a simple timeline, spanning from 1951 (the first year of the Festival) to 2023. All the names of the winners are highlighted, along with the songs they presented. You can also see whether the winner was a man, woman, or a musical group, and whether they won multiple editions, either consecutively or not. If it was a collaboration with featured artists, their gender is also indicated. The winners with the most editions are also listed.
For the project, Irene and I worked on a shared file in Figma, exchanging ideas and revisions to make the result as satisfying as possible. I’m happy that the poster of the visualization now decorates her colorful room.
