Martrioska

Website

The mARTrioska Project is a digital initiative with the general objective of exploring and questioning topics related to the field of art history. This project leverages linked open data to examine and interpret available information, drawing from resources such as the ARTchives project and other data-driven platforms like Wikidata.

A key feature of the project is the use of the matrioska—a traditional Russian nesting doll—as a metaphor for the structure of the website. This conceptual framework mirrors the way the project delves into the subject matter: starting from broader, overarching themes and progressively narrowing the focus to more specific aspects.

Our study zeroes in on the persistent issue of gender inequality in art history. By analyzing the representation and distribution of male and female contributions throughout the history of art, we aim to shed light on the ongoing disparity and reflect on the limited visibility afforded to women in this field. This layered approach not only emphasizes the complexity of the subject but also highlights the nuanced connections between data, history, and societal norms.
