Data Visualization

This project was undoubtedly one of the most interesting visualizations I’ve worked on. The client who requested it, Marco, is a huge fan of Lucio Battisti (as much as I am!). Lucio Battisti is considered one of the greatest Italian singer-songwriters, one of the most important and influential composers of the 20th century. I’ve been listening to his music since I was 5 years old, when my mother played his cassettes in the car, and I’ve never stopped. That’s why working on this project brought out such strong emotions for me.

Marco wanted to thoroughly analyze and explore the lyrics of his favorite artist’s albums. So, I analyzed each of Battisti’s albums and singles, examining the most frequently used words through Voyant Tools, a web-based reading and analysis environment for digital texts.

This radar chart, therefore, explores the 18 studio albums of Lucio Battisti (excluding lyrics in other languages and singles from the analysis). For each album, I identified the most recurring words, with the top five displayed in smaller charts. In cases where more than five words are equally frequent, all of them are shown. Additionally, to be included in the chart, a word had to appear at least three times in an album. For each album, the collaborators who worked with Battisti on the compositions are also listed. It’s fascinating to see how the more experimental albums from the later stages of his career are reflected not only in the music but also in the choice of words.

The main chart shows the 50 most frequent words across Lucio Battisti’s entire discography, with the dominating word being, of course, “amore” (love).
